Physical Education
Physical education provides children with learning opportunities through the medium of movement. It contributes to their overall development by helping them to lead full, active and healthy lives.
There are six strands in the P.E. Curriculum
- Athletics
- Dance
- Gymnastics
- Games
- Outdoor and adventure activities
- Aquatics
Each of these six strands are covered by teachers over a two- year period, ensuring that at least 5 strands are taught yearly. For aquatics children from Junior Infants – Sixth Class receive a 6 week block of swimming lessons in Monaghan Swimming Pool biannually.
Both teachers ensure that all pupils receive at least one hour of PE per week and include all details in their fortnightly planners. The school introduced a standardised PE timetable. Teachers teach the same PE strand and the same Fundamental Movement Skill at the same time every month. This facilitates the set-up of equipment and provides them with the opportunity to share ideas and resources with one another.
To help to improve their mobility, co-ordination and confidence, children with special needs receive additional individual PE time with the SET teacher Mrs Hagan.
While engaging in the process of applying for our Active Flag, it was felt that our current PE policy needed to be perused and updated. During the year 2018/2019 the PE policy was updated to ensure all six strands were taught over a two-year period, which was subsequently ratified by the Board of Management. After a teacher attended training in the ‘Move often, Move well’ programme, it was deemed necessary to ensure that all fundamental movement skills were taught discreetly through each strand unit.
