National Tree Day
This year’s Tree Day Theme is all about Planting Trees and Building a Better Future.
We explored how trees provide us with clean air, shelter for wildlife, and the timber that has been used to build homes, furniture, tools, and ships for generations.
Spotlight on the SCOTS PINE
This year, we’re celebrating the Scots pine, that’s called Pinus sylvestris in Latin and An Giúis in Irish!
Despite the name, the Scots pine is native to Ireland. It’s an evergreen tree with long needles and pine cones, and it’s brilliant for wildlife.
We applied for and received our scots pine sapling which we planted in a large pot and look forward to seeing it grow.
We also took part in Green Schools and Globe Ireland interactive webinar on “Talking Trees” to celebrate National Tree Day. We learned lots of fun facts about our native trees, including what’s going on beneath the soil and how trees can communicate with each other!
We finished up by testing the pupils knowledge with a Tree Quiz!
