WOW Day 2019

15th May 2019

On Wednesday the 15th of May 2019 our school, St. Comgall’s N.S. took part in “Walk on Wednesday” (WOW Day) during National Walk to School Week. This was our Action Day.

This was a big undertaking for our school due to our rural location and the small narrow roads surrounding our school. After some discussions at our Green-Schools committee meeting we came up with a plan! It took a lot of organisation by our school staff and Green-School Committee but we decided our best option was to start our walk to school at the home of two of our pupils from County Fermanagh. Caoimhe and Kayla McCaffery were the lucky pupils to be chosen. Their parents were very generous in allowing us to begin our “Sunny, Saunter to St. Comgall’s” here.

A number of parents volunteered to accompany us on our walk by driving in front and behind the walkers, ensuring the safety of our pupils. We organised that our bus driver would drop the pupils who travel by bus at McCaffrey’s house. Parent who usually dropped pupils by car to school also dropped their children to McCaffrey’s house on the morning of the 15th of May.

The pupils arrived on what was a glorious sunny morning and off we went. We took some photos on our journey. To end our journey, pupils even walked around the school on bare feet. As we are learning about Ireland in the early 1900’s in History, this helped us understand how walking to school must have felt for children at that time. Finally, pupils got to relax and enjoy healthy treats prepared by the teachers. We then completed activity sheets based on what the pupils had seen and heard on their journey to school. The pupils also created a human WOW sign on the yard. They were delighted with the photo. A super morning was had by all.

Without the cooperation of our parents and bus driver our “Sunny, Saunter to St. Comgall’s” would never have happened.
