Walkability Audit

6th Nov 2018

On the 6th of November 2018 we conducted a Walkability Audit.
A Walkability Audit is a methodical examination of how pedestrian-friendly a route may or may not be. The word Walkability means the “ability to walk”.

It was a dull wet day so we put our coats on and headed outside. Description of the route audited: We walked in both directions away from the school as far as both bridges
We noted down anything we saw that we felt could help improve our community and make it safer.

A few areas we thought could be improved upon were:
- the holes and the uneven surface outside the school.
- the parking bays repainted.
- a bus stop sign and a designated parking bay for the bus.
- “Slow Children Crossing” twisted sign to face the right way.
- the disabled parking space repainted.
- “Slow Down“, “School Ahead” signs painted on the road.
- a reduced speed limit outside the school.

We completed our Walkability Audit together with Sorcha Brophy, An Taisce, in the senior class room out lining our findings. We forwarded our report to the road safety officer in Monaghan County Council. As a result of this the council have corrected our sign to face the correct direction. They also pledged to resurface and line our parking area. Phase one, resurfacing, is complete and we are currently awaiting Phase 2, line painting, to be completed. We are delighted with this achievement!!
