Mapping Exercise and Travel Survey

Mapping Exercise and Travel Survey

We started our journey with a Mapping Exercise and Travel Survey facilitated by our Green-Schools co-ordinator Sorcha Brophy, Travel Education Officer on the 16th of October 2018. The map and results of the survey are displayed on our Green-School notice board. The Mapping Workshop took place in the senior classroom (pupils from the junior room joined us). Our mapping workshop began with a discussion about how we travel to school, the use of fossil fuels and how they can harm the environment. Pupils came up with ideas how to reduce our emissions like carpooling and using the bus.
We began to create our map “Where We Come From?” First, we traced the outline using the white board and Google Maps. We traced roads, rivers, boarders etc. We used stars to mark pupils homes. Gold stars for pupils travelling by bus, silver stars for pupils travelling by car pool and red stars for pupils travelling by car. This project allowed us to see the catchment area our pupils are coming from and the route the bus takes. From our inspection of the above it was agreed very little changes could take place as any pupils on the bus route were availing of it, pupils traveling by private car were doing so due to the size of their families (they have no room to car pool) and everyone else was carpooling.
