Cycle Safety Workshop

19th Sep 2019

On the 19th of September 2019 Sorcha Brophy, Travel Education Officer, returned to our school. Sorcha together with Mrs Donnelly guided the pupils from 2nd to 6th classes through proper and safe cycling in a Bike Workshop. The pupils had an enjoyable morning learning all about cycle safety. The pupils from Junior Infants to 1st classes did not miss out, they too got to learn all about cycle safety with their teachers Mrs. Pennell and Mrs Hagan. Watch out for us on the roads!
Do’s and don’ts of safe cycling for children
Do:
• Cycle a bike matched to their height and experience
• Check the size: When you are on your bicycle, stand straddling the top bar of your bike so that both feet are flat on the ground.
• Wear a safety helmet
• Make sure your bike helmet fits you well. Always wear your helmet the right way so it will protect you: Make sure it covers your forehead and don't let it tip back. Always fasten the straps.
• Make a safety checklist is important. Ask your mom or dad for help:
• Make sure your seat, handlebars, and wheels fit tightly.
• Check and oil your chain regularly.
• Check your brakes to be sure they work well and aren't sticking.
• Check your tyres to make sure they have enough air and the right amount of tyre pressure.
• Use lights in dark or dusky conditions
• Always wear luminous clothing such as hi-vis vests, fluorescent armbands and reflective belts so that other road users can see you
Don’t allow them to:
• Cycle on public roads unsupervised (if under 12)
• Wear loosely-worn scarves or other clothing that could get caught in the wheels or chain-set
• Take unnecessary risks
